Seven candidates announced for IOC presidency

The race to succeed Thomas Bach as International Olympic Committee (IOC) president is heating up. Seven candidates have thrown their hats in the ring, each bringing a unique blend of experience and vision to the table.

Among the frontrunners is Lord Sebastian Coe, a two-time Olympic champion and former president of World Athletics. Coe, who has been instrumental in shaping the modern Olympic movement, has emphasized the need for greater investment in sport and a laser-like focus on the core mission of the IOC.

Kirsty Coventry, a Zimbabwean swimming legend, is making history as the first African and female candidate for the presidency. Her experience as an athlete representative on the IOC and her commitment to developing sports in her home country make her a formidable contender.

Other notable candidates include:

  • Prince Feisal al Hussein of Jordan, a former athlete and advocate for peace through sport.

  • Johan Eliasch of Sweden, a prominent figure in the winter sports industry.

  • David Lappartient of France, president of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).

  • Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr. of Spain, a member of the IOC executive board and son of the former IOC president.

  • Morinari Watanabe of Japan, president of the International Gymnastics Federation.

The election for the new IOC president will take place in March 2025, with the winner taking office in June of that year. As the candidates present their visions for the future of the Olympics, the sporting world eagerly awaits the outcome of this historic race.
